Woodbridge Area Guide

A TAUK guide to living in Woodbridge, Suffolk

What is it like to live in Woodbridge?

Starting as a port at the end of the river Deben, this town once hosted shipbuilding and sail-making companies. While both can still be found on the river, their operations are now somewhat scaled down.

Location

Woodbridge is a historic market town in Suffolk, England, about eight miles up the River Deben from the sea. It lies seven miles northeast of central Ipswich as part of the wider Ipswich built-up area.

History

On the banks of the river is the famous tide mill, once providing flour for the residents, and now, although still working, is more a historical tribute to the traditional milling methods.

The Mill Pond has been converted into The Tide Mill Yacht Harbour, one of the best Marinas on the east coast. Providing refuge for the travelled sailor. You can step aboard a river cruise from the quay adjacent to the mill. An open-top boat with a personal guide with abundant knowledge of the area.

On the opposite banks of the river is Sutton Hoo – the burial site of Anglo-Saxon Kings and the inspiration for the film The Dig.

This market town has the Shire Hall on the hill, once used for judicial review and an open corn market. Today a market still trades. Meaning you will often see a bride and groom having photos taken in front of this impressive building. Walking down the hill and through the high street, browsing the boutique shops and stopping for coffee at Honey and Harvey’s is an experience to repeat often!

Schooling is fantastic. Farlingaye High School usually sits towards the top of the leagues and is often awarded an outstanding review by Ofsted.

For those looking for boarding or independence, Woodbridge School provides a fantastic setting. For further education, buses run into Ipswich Town Centre for the University of Suffolk and Suffolk College.
